Part 9 of 15 · 5 minute read · 11 October 2026

The top rooftop bars in London pair a genuine view with a comfortable seat for when the wind picks up. In the City, Madison and the Sky Garden are superb, as are Radio Rooftop on the Strand, the Southbank Centre’s Queen Elizabeth Hall Roof Garden and, by Trafalgar Square, The Rooftop on top of The Trafalgar St James. Below are twelve rooftop bars in London, sorted by area, with the best picks for sunset and some advice on the weather.

All twelve were operating in 2026, but rooftops change more than most bars: some open only for the season, many shut terraces when the weather is bad, and some accept bookings for just part of the space. Confirm with the venue before you set off.

Before you go: rooftops and the London weather

The weather is the one part of the evening you can’t reserve. A few simple habits make a rooftop night much more dependable:

  • Look at the forecast on the afternoon itself, not the day before. Up high, wind counts as much as rain.
  • Pick a rooftop with shelter. Glass orangeries, heated terraces and enclosed sky bars keep the view whatever the weather.
  • Make a booking. Lots of rooftops hold back space for walk-ins, but queues on a warm Friday can stretch.
  • Take an extra layer. Even on a summer night, the temperature up top can fall by several degrees after sunset.
  • Check the sunset time. In December the sun sets before 4pm, and in late June after 9pm, so it’s worth arriving around an hour beforehand.

West End and Trafalgar Square

The Rooftop, Trafalgar St James

Sitting on the hotel’s roof at 2 Spring Gardens, The Rooftop gazes across Trafalgar Square to Westminster and the Thames. It has open-air and covered seating, an open fire, heaters and blankets for chillier nights, making it one of central London’s more weather-proof rooftops.

The Nest at Treehouse London

Perched above Langham Place, a short way north of Oxford Circus, The Nest offers views reaching Canary Wharf, the London Eye and the greenery of Regent’s Park. There’s an indoor lounge as well as an open-air terrace; the drinks are seasonal cocktails and champagne, and there’s no full dining menu. Handy for Marylebone and Fitzrovia.

Radio Rooftop at ME London

Radio Rooftop crowns the ME London hotel on the Strand and has some of the finest views in the West End: St Paul’s dome, the South Bank and the Thames. It livens up later on, with DJs, so arrive early if you want to talk. Reserve for weekends.

South Bank and Southwark

Queen Elizabeth Hall Roof Garden

In 2026 Time Out voted it the best rooftop bar in London. The Southbank Centre’s roof garden is a seasonal favourite that opens from spring into summer. There’s a lawn above the river, with planted beds of flowers, fruit trees and other greenery, and drinks come from a bar built into a converted shipping container. The effect is of a hidden garden in the heart of town.

Forza Wine at the National Theatre

Forza Wine sits on the National Theatre’s top floor, with a balcony gazing down the river, and opens all year. With a Waterloo Bridge view, good wine and small plates, it suits a drink either side of a performance.

Seabird at The Hoxton, Southwark

Seabird is on The Hoxton’s fourteenth floor, on Blackfriars Road. It’s a seafood restaurant and bar with an extensive oyster list and a terrace facing north over the river towards the City, which is at its best in summer.

The City

The Sky Garden

The Sky Garden crowns 20 Fenchurch Street: a glass dome with landscaped gardens, bars and restaurants inside. Entry costs nothing but has to be booked ahead, and booking a table in one of its restaurants or bars gets you in as well. It’s London’s best option for a view when it’s raining.

Madison, St Paul’s

Madison is perched on top of One New Change and faces the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral directly, among the most dramatic close-up views anywhere in London. There’s a large heated roof terrace as well as a cocktail bar and a restaurant.

Sushisamba, Bishopsgate

Sushisamba occupies floors 38 and 39 of the Heron Tower. Panoramic glass lifts take you up, and the outdoor terraces rank among Europe’s highest, looking out over the City and further. The food is Japanese, Brazilian and Peruvian, and the whole experience feels like an occasion.

Aviary, Finsbury Square

Aviary, ten floors up at the Montcalm Royal London House, has an open-air terrace overlooking the City skyline and a seasonal British menu. The terrace shuts before the bar does, so arrive in good time if you’d like to sit outdoors.

East and south London

Boundary Rooftop, Shoreditch

Reached from Redchurch Street, the Boundary rooftop bar and grill looks over Shoreditch towards the City. A heated glass orangery lets you enjoy the view year-round, even when it’s too cold on the terrace.

Frank’s, Peckham

Frank’s is on level ten of a multi-storey car park just off Rye Lane. It opens in summer only, from mid-May until mid-September. Expect art installations, plus views towards The Shard and St Paul’s. It’s relaxed and hugely popular, so arrive early.

Which rooftop for which evening?

On a first date, pick somewhere you can sit and chat: The Nest, the Trafalgar St James rooftop or Madison in the early evening. To celebrate, Sushisamba’s height and glamour leave an impression. For an easy summer afternoon that slides into evening, try Frank’s or the Queen Elizabeth Hall Roof Garden. And for dinner with a view in a single booking, Seabird, Madison and the Sky Garden restaurants all serve proper meals.

Based in west London? Genuine rooftop bars are scarce around Kensington, Bayswater and Paddington, but Radio Rooftop and The Nest are only a short cab ride away, while catching a river bus from the South Bank is a lovely way to get to the City rooftops.

Rooftop bars in London for the best sunsets

For the sun going down in the west over the river, the Queen Elizabeth Hall Roof Garden and Radio Rooftop are hard to top. For sunset behind the City’s towers, go to the Sky Garden or Madison. For height and spectacle, Sushisamba. And if it rains, the Sky Garden, the orangery at Boundary and The Rooftop on the Trafalgar St James keep the view and keep you dry.

Questions

In 2026 Time Out voted the Queen Elizabeth Hall Roof Garden, by the river on the South Bank, the best rooftop bar in London. For classic skyline views, Madison facing St Paul's, Radio Rooftop on the Strand and the City's Sky Garden are all superb.

Yes. Boundary in Shoreditch offers a heated glass orangery, the Sky Garden is completely enclosed, and the Trafalgar St James rooftop provides heaters, an open fire and blankets. Seasonal spots such as the Queen Elizabeth Hall Roof Garden and Frank's shut when it gets colder.

It's sensible, particularly at weekends and on warm evenings. Free entry to the Sky Garden must be booked ahead. Some rooftops hold back space for walk-ins, but the queues can be lengthy.

The Queen Elizabeth Hall Roof Garden and Radio Rooftop for the sun setting over the river, and Madison or the Sky Garden if you want the City skyline. Get there roughly an hour ahead to find a good spot.

Smart casual usually works, but take an extra layer because it can turn much colder up high after sunset. Some hotel rooftops set a dress code, so check first.
