Courtesan Meaning: What the Word Really Describes
A courtesan was an educated woman who kept company with wealthy men, often for years, valued for conversation and culture as much as anything else. Today the word is used for a high class escort booked for whole evenings rather than hours.
A courtesan was a woman who kept company with wealthy or powerful men, often for years at a time, trading wit, culture and companionship as much as anything physical. The word carries a particular history: courtesans were educated, independent and frequently famous, and they held a social position no other woman of their time could. Today it is used, usually with a touch of romance, for a high class escort who is booked for whole evenings rather than hours.
Where the word comes from
It began at court. The Italian cortigiana was the female form of cortigiano, a courtier: someone who belonged in the circles around a ruler. By the sixteenth century it had come to mean a woman who moved in those circles on her own terms, supported by the men whose company she kept.
What set a courtesan apart from other women selling company was education. Many read Latin and Greek, wrote poetry, played music and held salons that artists and ambassadors were glad to attend. Veronica Franco in Venice published two books of verse. The arrangement was rarely a single night: a courtesan might be the regular companion of one or two men for years.
Courtesan, escort, mistress: the differences
| Term | What it describes |
|---|---|
| Courtesan | Historically, an educated companion to wealthy men, usually over a long period. Now used for an escort booked for dinners, travel and whole evenings. |
| Escort | A companion booked for an agreed length of time, from an hour upwards. The modern, plain word. |
| Mistress | A long-standing private relationship, usually alongside a marriage, and not a professional arrangement. |
| Sugar baby | An arrangement of ongoing support in exchange for company, agreed privately rather than through an agency. |

What the word means on an escort site today
When an escort or an agency uses “courtesan”, it is usually a signal about the kind of booking rather than about her rates: longer engagements, dinner first, conversation that carries the evening, and the manners to go anywhere. It suggests someone you would be glad to introduce at a table, not simply someone who arrives at a hotel door.
That is the territory our high class escorts occupy, and our guide to what makes a high class escort explains what to look for.
Is it a flattering word?
Mostly, yes. It carries none of the sneer that older words for sex work carry, because the historical courtesan was admired for her mind as much as anything else. Some escorts dislike it as old-fashioned or pretentious; others use it with pleasure. As with any term on a profile, the safest course is to use the word she uses about herself.
