Open Relationship Meaning: How It Works and the Rules Couples Set

In an open relationship, the two partners agree that each may have sex with other people. Polyamory differs because it allows other relationships, and swinging differs because couples usually do it together.

Open relationship meaning: a committed couple where both people have agreed that sex with others is permitted. That agreement is everything. Take it away and the very same behaviour is just cheating, and calling it open does not make it clean.

Open, polyamorous or swinging?

  • Open relationship. A single main couple. Sex outside it is permitted, but romance generally is not.
  • Polyamory. Several relationships at once, each with feelings and commitment, conducted openly with everybody aware. The word joins Greek and Latin and means many loves.
  • Swinging. A couple plays with other people, normally side by side and in a social setting, such as parties or meeting other couples.
  • Monogamish. Largely monogamous, with a few narrow exceptions both agree on. The columnist Dan Savage came up with it.

The rules couples really agree

Any arrangement that survives has terms, and they are usually the same few. Who is out of bounds, normally friends, colleagues and former partners. Whether it happens together or separately. How much each partner wants to hear afterwards, anywhere from every detail to none at all. Protection and testing, spelled out rather than taken for granted. Whether anyone is met a second time, because repeat meetings are where feelings creep in. And a way to put everything on hold without a row.

If the conversation is difficult, put the rules in writing. The couples who feel awkward about doing that are usually the ones who most need to.

Why it succeeds, and why it fails

It succeeds when both partners genuinely want it. It fails, nearly every time, when one partner goes along with it to hold on to the other, or to rescue something that is already falling apart. An open relationship is a framework for a relationship that works, not a fix for one that does not.

The other frequent cause of failure is imbalance: one partner meeting people much more easily than the other. That gap is foreseeable, and it is better talked through in advance than afterwards.

Where an escort comes in

Some couples start with a couples escort booking. For a first experience it has clear benefits: she is a professional, she will not message afterwards, nobody will fall for anyone, and you go home together. Our guide to booking as a couple explains how to set one up, and the same ground rules apply as above: set your limits first, choose a signal, and either partner can call a halt.

When one partner books alone and the other knows, that is simply another open arrangement, and all we would add is that being honest about it is usually easier to keep up than keeping it secret.

Where to next

Questions

A committed couple where each partner has agreed the other may have sex with other people. That agreement is what separates it from cheating.

An open relationship permits sex outside the couple. Polyamory permits other relationships, with feelings and commitment, conducted openly with everybody aware.

Who is out of bounds, whether it happens together or separately, how much each wants to hear, protection and testing, whether anyone is met twice, and how to put it on hold.

They work when both partners genuinely want one. They fail when one goes along with it to keep the other, or when it is used to rescue something already falling apart.

Plenty of couples find it is. She is a professional, nobody will fall for anyone, and you go home together. Set your limits first, just as you would in any other situation.
