Threesomes: How They Work and How to Arrange One

A threesome is sex between three people, usually a couple inviting someone in. Almost everything that makes one good or bad is decided before anyone takes their clothes off.

Part 11 of 15 · 2 minute read · 13 October 2026

A threesome is sex between three people, usually arranged either by a couple inviting someone in or by one person joining two others. The two common shapes have names on profiles and in guides: MFF, one man and two women, and MMF, two men and one woman. Our guide to MMF and FFM covers the abbreviations.

Almost everything that makes a threesome good or bad is decided before anyone takes their clothes off. This is the part most people skip.

Before: the conversation

If you are in a couple, have the conversation when you are not in bed and not drunk. Three questions do most of the work:

  • Why do we want this? Curiosity and fun are good reasons. Fixing a struggling relationship is not; a third person makes an existing crack wider.
  • What is in and what is out? Be specific rather than polite. Who touches whom, what happens if one of you wants to stop, whether kissing is allowed, whether anyone stays the night.
  • What would make either of us unhappy afterwards? Name it now. Jealousy that arrives the next morning is the usual way these evenings go wrong.

Agree a word or a signal that means stop, and agree that either of you can use it without explaining. Nobody has ever regretted having one.

Finding the third person

This is where most threesomes die. Asking a friend changes the friendship whatever happens. Apps work but take weeks and often end in nobody turning up.

Booking an escort is the straightforward route, which is why couples do it: the arrangements are explicit, the boundaries are agreed in advance through a third party rather than negotiated awkwardly in person, and nobody has expectations about next week. Our escorts who welcome couples are listed under couples bookings, and the guide to booking as a couple explains how it is arranged.

If the shape you want is two women, our duo escorts already work together, which removes the most awkward variable of all: two strangers who have to get along.

On the night

  1. Start with a drink and conversation. Thirty minutes of ordinary talk makes everything afterwards easier.
  2. Nobody is a prop. The third person is in the room too; attention that goes only one way is the quickest way to sour the evening.
  3. Check in. A look and a question is enough, and it is not unsexy.
  4. Stop when anyone wants to stop. Immediately, without discussion or persuasion.
  5. Keep safer sex simple. Condoms, fresh ones between partners, and nobody has to ask twice.

Afterwards

Couples who do this well talk the next day rather than the next week: what you liked, what you would change, whether you would do it again. Feeling strange afterwards is common and does not mean it was a mistake. Feeling resentful usually means a boundary was crossed that nobody named beforehand, which is an argument for having named more of them.

Our guide to open relationships covers the longer-term version of the same conversation, and intimacy and connection covers the quieter part.

Where to next

Questions

MFF is one man and two women; MMF is two men and one woman. They are the two usual shapes a threesome takes, and the abbreviations appear on profiles and in guides.

Asking a friend changes the friendship, and apps are slow and unreliable. Booking an escort who welcomes couples is the straightforward route, because the boundaries are agreed in advance through the agency rather than negotiated in person.

Agree beforehand what is in and what is out, agree a word that means stop which anyone can use without explaining, and give the third person as much attention as each other during. Most regret comes from a boundary nobody named.

No. It tends to widen an existing crack rather than close it. It works best between people who are already happy and simply curious.
